– A Taste of Holiday Tradition: Yule Logs, Figgy Pudding, and British Delights –
Agent Contribution: Catherine Stephens, Operations Manager
Incorporating our own individual backgrounds into how we celebrate and share the holidays is such a special part of this time of the year.
For me, I relish the various traditions passed down to me via my mom and our roots in northern England: Yule logs, Christmas crackers, and figgy pudding. Seasonal treats that stand out in my mind as being looked forward to year after year, decade after decade.
We in Northeast Los Angeles are fortunate to live where we can easily and affordably source goods (edible and otherwise!) from around the world, right here locally. How incredibly blessed we are to cherish and maintain these foods and practices, while learning of those shared by others!
Figgy Pudding & Yule Logs… what the?!?… But, oh, they’re delish! 😉 I do love a decadent dessert, replete with tradition!
The Yule Log cake has its roots in the ancient festival of Yule, which was celebrated by the Germanic people. During this festival, a large log was burned in the hearth as a symbol of the sun, which was believed to bring warmth and light to the winter months. The log was usually decorated with greenery and candles, and it was often accompanied by feasting and revelry.
Over time, the tradition of the Yule Log evolved and eventually became associated with Christmas, particularly in France and England.
In England, the Yule Log cake also became a popular dessert during the Victorian era. It is still frequently offered and enjoyed at holiday dinners and get-togethers. My family’s tradition is to decorate the log with the lil’ toys won in the Christmas crackers!
Christmas “Figgy” Pudding:
Regardless of what you call it, this delicious (ahem) Christmas tradition is a staple of the British holiday table. Different than creamy puddings and custards, this Christmas “pudding” dates back to medieval England and is a steamed cake full of spices, raisins, and currants soaked in brandy. If it contains figs, it is called a Figgy Pudding. 😉 Fun fact – plum pudding usually has raisins, not plums, since “plums” was once a term used to describe raisins.
For comparison, that stereotypical brick of an American fruitcake shares similarities in texture and taste. Ah, the taste of the holidays!
Here are a couple of our favorite shops for British goodies:
Kitty O’Shea’s Irish & UK Market on Eagle Rock Boulevard.
Rose Tree Cottage English Village Shop on Pasadena Avenue, famous for their Afternoon Tea!
And these glorious spots, nearby in Glendale, on Ocean View Blvd:
Berolina Bakery & Pastry Shop… mind-blowing and drool-inducing for a wide variety of European desserts.
Oh so conveniently located next to Schreiner’s Fine Sausages – they also serve phenomenal sandwiches!!
All must visits… at any time of the year. 😉
