As Highland Park has emerged as one of the funnest, hippest spots in LA, there’s been some—dare I say—gentrification happening. But… along with the influx of new places, many of the longtime mainstays are still going strong.
Pizza:
Triple Beam Pizza – 5918 N. Figueroa St.
Triple Beam serves delicious pizza with creative toppings. I personally love the Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Bacon, but they also offer standards like Cheese or Pepperoni. For the foodies, there’s Roasted Mushroom and Shallot, or Potato Sage and Truffle. They even have a vegan Chorizo pizza, plus a great selection of sides and salads.
Folliero’s Italian Food and Pizza – 5566 N. Figueroa St.
Founded in 1968 by Antonio “Tony” Folliero from Naples, Italy, Folliero’s has been a Highland Park staple for decades. Tony, the son of an artisan baker, brought his family’s Neapolitan recipes to LA. Today, Tony and his daughter Teresa still work together to keep the tradition alive. This place is a community favorite for everything from first dates to Little League lunches. And where else can you get a plate of lasagna for just $9?
Ice Cream:
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams – 5601 N. Figueroa St.
Jeni’s makes ice cream from scratch with a smooth, buttercream texture and bright flavors. My go-to is Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks. My friends are fans of Brown Butter Almond Brittle and Brambleberry Crisp—sometimes they even get a scoop of each. Right now, they’re serving a Strawberry Shortcake Parfait, which means I better get over there soon. Besides peanut butter, strawberry is my #2.
Baskin Robbins – 5802 N. Figueroa St.
I’m not gonna lie—I like Jeni’s, but I love Baskin Robbins. Call me old-school, but their Peanut Butter Chocolate is unbeatable. Even my husband is hooked. With great texture, flavor, and options, plus a refreshed interior, this location is perfect for picking up pints or grabbing an ice cream cake for your next party.
Tacos:
HomeState – 5611 N. Figueroa St.
Breakfast tacos that make me so happy. One taco is usually enough, and they’re named after Texas rivers. Some highlights:
Trinity: Eggs, bacon, potatoes, cheddar
Guadalupe: Eggs, chorizo, cheddar
Comal (vegetarian): Eggs, black beans, Monterey Jack
Don’t Mess with Texas: Beans, bacon, potatoes, cheddar
…and more!
They also serve tacos all day, plus salads, drinks, and booze—but I’m obsessed with the breakfast tacos.
Villa’s Tacos – 5455 N. Figueroa St.
From humble beginnings at a roadside stand to a full restaurant, Chef Victor Villa has won the hearts of Highland Park. His recipes, inspired by his grandmother’s traditional Mexican cooking, are full of flavor and authenticity. Expect a line—it’s worth the wait. Some must-try tacos:
Pierna de Pollo – Chicken Thigh
Ranchera Asada – Skirt Steak
Chorizo de Puerco – Pork Chorizo
Grilled Soyrizo w/ Pineapple & Onion
Frijoles con Nopal – Black Beans & Cactus
Papas a la Plancha – Lightly Salted Potatoes
These are taco-truck sized, so grab a Villa’s Trio and sample a few!
Juices & Smoothies:
Berry Bowl – 5056 York Blvd.
Founded in 2014, Berry Bowl is woman-owned and known for the best acai bowls in the area. Choose from 30+ toppings and pair your bowl with a smoothie, fresh juice, or healthy snack. It’s a go-to for fast, clean eating in Highland Park.
Tropical Juice – 5729 N. Figueroa St.
I’ve been drinking their fresh juices for 13 years, and they never disappoint. My favorite is the Jugo Verde, but I also love the Vampiro, Energetico, and Super Dinamico. They make classic Mexican-style smoothies with milk and even offer Bionico—a dreamy mix of fruit, granola, and a unique creamy sauce. Truly old-school and delicious.
Coffee & Bakeries:
Civil Coffee – 5629 N. Figueroa St.
Looking for a great cup of coffee and a chill vibe? Civil is your spot. I recently switched from oat milk lattes to their iced cappuccino (so good!). Their lavender latte is a must-try, and their pastries and avocado toast never disappoint. Bonus: ample seating and parking.
La Monarca Bakery – 5835 N. Figueroa St.
Founded in 2006, La Monarca serves delicious Mexican-style coffee and hot chocolate made with milk—my son’s favorite since he was three! I recommend their Mexican wedding cookies and pan dulce. It’s not super old, but it’s been part of the neighborhood long enough to feel like a classic.
So while Highland Park continues to attract new, exciting restaurants, bars, and coffee joints, let’s not forget the trailblazers who paved the way. Support local. Support legacy. Keep them in business.
