– Maximalism: Embracing the Bold and the Colorful in Your Home –
In the world of interior design, eclectic maximalism embraces the bold and the colorful. Unlike the clean, sparse lines of minimalism, maximalism celebrates abundance and individuality. And in a city like Los Angeles, where diversity and creativity are the norm, this design trend feels right at home.
Why Maximalism?
Maximalism isn’t about cramming your space with stuff; it’s about curating a home that tells your story. It offers a way to make your space feel as unique and vibrant as you feel on the inside. Here’s why it’s catching on:
Personal Expression
Your home should reflect who you are. Maximalism lets you showcase your interests, passions, and collections in a way that feels cohesive and intentional. Whether it’s art, books, or heirlooms, this style encourages you to fill your space with things that bring you joy.
Warmth and Comfort
Think plush fabrics, layered textures, and cozy nooks. Maximalism turns your home into a sanctuary where luxury and comfort go hand in hand. Imagine sinking into a velvet sofa surrounded by pillows in various patterns and colors—a perfect blend of style and relaxation.
Cultural Richness
LA is a melting pot, and your home can be too. Maximalism allows you to draw inspiration from different cultures, eras, and styles, mixing them to create a space that feels worldly and sophisticated.
Bringing Maximalism to Life
So, how do you bring this vibrant style into your home without it feeling chaotic? Here’s how to embrace maximalism while keeping it elegant:
Start with Color
Don’t be afraid to play with bold, rich colors. Jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, and ruby can add depth and drama to any room. Pair them with metallic accents or deep, moody hues for a luxe effect.
Mix Patterns and Textures
Combine florals with geometrics, velvet with silk. The key is to balance scale and color so everything feels intentional. This layering adds richness and makes your space feel lived-in and welcoming.
Make a Statement
Whether it’s an oversized chandelier, a dramatic piece of art, or a beautifully upholstered vintage chair, include a few standout pieces that anchor your room and draw the eye.
Display Your Collections
Have a passion for vintage records, sculptures, or rare books? Don’t hide them away—put them on display! Maximalism is all about showcasing what you love. Use open shelving or elegant display cases to keep things organized but visible.
Blend Eras and Styles
One of the joys of maximalism is its freedom. You can mix a modern art piece with a classic antique without it feeling out of place. The result is a space that feels collected over time, rather than designed in one go.
So, if you’re ready to ditch the minimalism and embrace a fuller, more expressive way of living, maximalism might just be the perfect fit for your LA home. It’s not just a trend—it’s a lifestyle that celebrates the art of living well.

Although it may feel like summer is winding down, the weather in LA tells a different story. We have a few more months while the days are still long, to enjoy the sunshine. One of my favorite ways to make the most of summer in my NELA neighborhood is by meeting up with friends for outdoor drinks in the late afternoons and early evenings. Here are some of my go-to spots.
Capri Club in Eagle Rock
A charming aperitivo bar with a retro Italian vibe, located on Eagle Rock Boulevard. The ambiance is lively and youthful, with superb drinks and small nibbles. It tends to fill up quickly, so I prefer to arrive early—ideally before 5pm—to secure an outdoor table. The Aperol spritz is especially refreshing on a summer evening and pairs wonderfully with the fried polenta sticks.
The Hermosillo in Highland Park
I love this spot for its spacious outdoor area and casual atmosphere. It is ideal for meeting up with a group of friends. And while most will go for the extensive selection of beers on tap, I will always gravitate towards a cold, dry rosé. A basket of fries from the bar menu is a must, and I often follow up with take-out from Joy on York across the street.
Holcomb in Highland Park
This cozy wine bar on York is an ideal spot to catch up with a friend or two. Located on the quieter side of York Boulevard with small tables and chairs that line the sidewalk – it is the perfect setting for long conversations over delicious wine and a shared plate of cheese and charcuterie.
Verdugo Bar in Glassell Park
Another favorite casual spot with a spacious outdoor patio, Verdugo Bar is an excellent place to meet friends for happy hour around the many picnic tables in the beer garden. The atmosphere is laid-back and relaxed, and is particularly chilled if you go before the sunset.
Permanent Record Roadhouse in Cypress Park
Permanent Records is more than just a record shop and live music venue—it’s also a full bar that hosts bi-weekly music trivia in its courtyard. It’s a fantastic way to connect with friends, test your music knowledge, and enjoy some drinks with good company. Outside food is welcome, so I often grab a sandwich from the Heights on the way or pupusas from next door during intermission!
