– THIS RETRO TREND IS MAKING A STYLISH COMEBACK –
In the ever-evolving world of interior design, trends often come full circle, and what was once deemed outdated can resurface with a fresh, modern twist. This is the case with wallpaper borders, a decorative element that adorned many homes in the 80s and 90s, only to fade into obscurity as minimalism took center stage. However, in recent years, this retro trend has been making a surprising comeback, captivating designers and homeowners alike with its versatility and ability to infuse spaces with personality.
The Modern Twist on Wallpaper Borders
While the concept of wallpaper borders may evoke memories of outdated patterns and cluttered spaces, the contemporary interpretations are anything but. Today’s wallpaper borders are sleek, graphic, and often minimalist in design, offering a playful way to add visual interest without overwhelming the space.
Unexpected Placements
Traditional wallpaper borders were typically confined to the ceiling line or used to separate two different wall coverings. However, contemporary designers are pushing the boundaries by incorporating borders in unexpected places, such as around door frames, along staircases, or even as a decorative trim for mantels and built-in shelves.
Low-Commitment, High-Impact
For those hesitant to commit to a full-scale wallpaper installation, borders offer a low-risk, high-impact solution. They allow you to experiment with patterns and colors without overwhelming the space, making them an ideal choice for renters or those with ever-changing design preferences.
Accentuating Architectural Features
Wallpaper borders can be used to highlight and accentuate architectural features, such as windows, doors, and fireplaces. By framing these elements with a bold border, you can create a visually striking focal point that draws the eye and adds depth to the space.
Zoning and Defining Spaces
In open-concept layouts or large rooms, wallpaper borders can be used to visually zone and define different areas. For instance, a border can be used to separate a living area from a dining space or to create the illusion of a cozy reading nook within a larger room.
How Can You Use Them?
Framing Artwork and Mirrors
Instead of traditional frames, consider using a wallpaper border to create a unique and eye-catching surround for your artwork or mirrors. This technique can add depth and texture to your walls while complementing the piece being displayed.
Accent Walls and Panels
Wallpaper borders can be used to create accent walls or panels, adding visual interest and depth to a space without overwhelming it with a full wallpaper installation. This technique is particularly effective in rooms with high ceilings or large expanses of wall space.
Stair Risers and Trim
For a truly unique touch, consider using wallpaper borders to decorate stair risers or as a decorative trim for baseboards and crown moldings. This unexpected application can add a playful and whimsical element to your space while showcasing your creative flair.
Whether you opt for a bold, graphic pattern or a subtle, understated design, wallpaper borders provide a low-commitment way to experiment with trends and showcase your unique aesthetic. So, embrace the retro charm of this trend, and let your creativity shine through in unexpected and delightful ways.

HOT AGENT CELEBRATES A BIRTHDAY IN LORETO, BCS
Birthdays are a time for celebration, exploring, and spending time with friends. My lovely Deirdre recently had a birthday on May 1st. In celebration, we decided to take a break from the seasonal gloom and mad hustle of Los Angeles and head south to sunny, mild, amazingly beautiful Baja California Sur.
After 1.5 hours on Alaska airlines, we land in Loreto, a quiet fishing town on the Sea of Cortez. After the most expensive 3 mile taxi, we walked into our three bedroom beach house that we were to share with friends.
Our week consisted of palapa sunrises, several boat trips, eating hundreds of tacos on the beauty and majesty of what is the Sea of Cortez. The Sea of Cortez is plentiful with puffer fish, flying fish, manta rays, stingrays, bow wave surfing dolphins, mahi-mahi, bluefin tuna, smelly sea lions and hundreds of other sea life specimens that are outside my limited encyclopedia of wildlife knowledge.
If you’ve ever considered heading to Baja California Sur to the Sea of Cortez, I encourage you to do so. It’s pretty incredible and only an hour and a half flight from Los Angeles!
Words set the table, pictures tell the story. Happy Birthday to my dearest, Deirdre!

We love our clients and they love us….
❝Our experience with L34 was strong from start to finish. My husband and I made the choice to relocate and needed to sell our home in Highland Park. At the first meeting, Deirdre, Terry and Catherine from L34 came prepared with marketing materials and research on our home and comps in the area, so we had a good idea of what our house would sell for before we even signed with them. In our initial meeting, they also gave us some great ideas for how to execute our long-distance move, and even offered to introduce us to agents in the area that we were moving to. This was extremely helpful! Once we started the actual home sale process, they were very efficient and organized. It’s clear that they are seasoned agents. There was a schedule for the prep work, inspections, open houses, and offer review date, all of which we stuck to. Speaking of prep work, they recommend good vendors, special shout out to John Delgado! I loved our home before, but they made it really shine. Buying and selling a home is an emotional process, and we felt like they were there with us for it. They were very responsive throughout, and proactive when it was appropriate. I’m sure I asked stupid questions as this was our first home sale, but they answered everything with the same enthusiasm and promptness. In the end we closed right on time for a price we were happy with. We would happily work with L34 again and/or recommend them to everyone we know looking to buy or sell a home on the east side!❞

Scott J. Leahy is a photographer and musician based in Los Angeles. Raised in Twentynine Palms, California, he moved to L.A. in 2006 to pursue a career as a touring and studio guitarist. After 15 years of traveling and performing across North America and Europe and appearing on numerous recordings, Scott felt an urge to channel his experiences and perspective into a visual medium.
His work attempts to distill the loneliness and isolation of modern life on an antiquated medium, utilizing the alchemy of the film photography process to capture the ever elusive nature of The Moment. At the same time, his images document the joy and elation of people coming together and the human need for connection in an increasingly solitary world.
