Spring is officially here—my favorite time of year!
One of the reasons I love it so much is because it’s time to plant my veggie garden and look forward to a summer full of fresh produce.
The best part? You don’t even need a yard to grow your own vegetables. Containers are perfect for tomatoes, and just a few plants can keep you stocked with delicious homegrown goodness all season long.
If you’re a tomato lover, make a note for next March: Tomatomania is an amazing event that’s been around for over 20 years. It’s the go-to spot for rare and flavorful tomato varieties, and it includes multiple local events throughout March where you can buy seedlings and get expert growing tips.
Although this year’s Tomatomania has passed, it’s not too late to get started. Fig Earth Supply, right here in Highland Park, is a Tomatomania partner and still has a great selection of tomato varieties to get your garden growing. Plus, they’re wonderful folks and fellow Highland Parkers.
After years of growing tomatoes, I’ve had my fair share of battles with the local critters. I don’t mind sharing, but they’re not exactly known for their generosity. Since I garden organically, I’ve had to get creative with pest control.
A few years ago, a friend shared a clever tip that’s worked really well for me: when your tomato plants are still young, stick plastic forks (tines up) in the soil around them. The animals don’t like stepping on the forks, which gives your plants a better chance to mature. Give it a try this year and see if it works for you!
