Sometimes the most powerful acts of giving come from those who’ve lost the most. After the Eaton Fire destroyed his home and every instrument he owned, my friend Brandon Jay didn’t retreat, he reached out. What started as a way to process his own grief turned into something bigger: Altadena Musicians, a grassroots effort helping fellow musicians rebuild. In giving back during his lowest moment, Brandon started a movement rooted in resilience and generosity.
The idea was inspired by the Altadena Girls, a group of 8th graders who began collecting makeup and other self-care items for middle school girls that had lost all their belongings and wanted to feel like themselves again.
Watching their effort take off made Brandon wonder: what could musicians do for each other? One of the first things he did was gather some fellow musicians for a raw, emotional set at Pasadena Neighbor Day. Every item on stage, clothing, gear, and instruments were donated or borrowed. It was a moment of defiant joy, belting out, Burning Down The House. It’s epic. Watch it here
Juiced by the magical powers of music and community, he quickly got to work and launched Altadena Musicians with a mission to replace instruments, music memorabilia and record collections lost in the fire. One of their first big projects was the Instrumental Giving app, which allows musicians to list what they lost and connect with donors. You can check it out or share it here.
Since then, Altadena Musicians has taken off. Rolling Stone featured the project. Def Leppard has donated instruments. They even teamed up with Devo at Cruel World Festival. Read the Rolling Stone piece here
Nearly six months later, the community is still rebuilding and Altadena Musicians haven’t stopped working to make others feel whole. That road to recovery is going to look different for each individual, but for some it starts with a guitar and vintage vinyl.
