I’m neither vegan or vegetarian, but many of my friends are — which can sometimes make me a bit of an honorary one by default. For that reason (and my attempt to eat healthier), I’ve gotten pretty familiar with some of the local veggie and vegan-friendly spots on the Eastside. Here are a few of my favorites:
Kitchen Mouse in Highland Park
It’s an Eastside favorite, located around the corner from our office on Figueroa. A super popular spot for brunch, the space is cozy and charming and tables at both the cafe and bakery are always full on any given day. While you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, I really love the breakfast tacos with scrambled eggs and the to-go mushroom sandwich from the bakery is to die for!

Maciel Plant-Base Butcher and Deli
Located at the corner of York and Aldama, Maciel is entirely vegan and offers a selection of plant based deli meats and cheese drawn from ingredients like nuts, chickpeas, vegetables and tofu. I love the Santa Fe Wrap which is nice and light with lots of veggies, and the faux turkey doesn’t taste heavily processed. A side of their coleslaw makes this the perfect to-go lunch.

My Vegan Eagle Rock
The all vegan, Asian leaning menu can be overwhelming with something like 100 items! Located in a shopping strip on Colorado Blvd, it’s casual and no-frills, but the food is always consistent and I can always rely on the pad see ew or veggie egg rolls when ordering takeout with a group of non meat eaters.

Mazal in Lincoln Heights
Serving up vegetarian and vegan Israeli cuisine, Mazal is an amazing spot to visit for dine-in or takeaway. The food is fresh and delicious with all the flavors you’d expect from the Middle East. They do great hummus and babaganoush and the Schwarma Rubbed Oyster Mushrooms and the Maghrebi Potatoes are the favorites!

BeeWali’s Vegan AF in Eagle Rock
A great spot to visit if you’re in the mood for simple, casual food but want to skip the meat. From burgers to bowls, the menu is all vegan and the flavors don’t lack. You can’t go wrong with the Falafel plate or the Mediterranean Burger and Fries.

One of the best things about this beautiful city and our local community is the amazing diversity in its people and its food! Don’t miss out on trying these innovative spots, even if you’re not solely vegan or vegetarian!
