I’ve driven by North Figueroa Bookshop a million times. I bet you have too. Like me, you’ve probably noticed the gorgeous murals and hand-painted signage. But a few months ago, while walking the neighborhood, I finally stepped inside and fell in love with this mighty little shop and its deep ties to LA’s literary community.
NFB is the brainchild of two LA-based independent publishers, Rare Bird and Unnamed Press. Tyson Cornell and Chris Heiser, the forces behind them, got their start at iconic bookstores like Skylight Books and Book Soup – places where I’ve spent many evenings waiting in line to get a book signed or attend a reading.
To me, a bookstore is one of the few places a neighborhood can breathe. There’s no pressure, just a quiet invitation to be curious. A momentary pause to wander through and exhale, see what you are drawn to that day, and maybe pick up a book that sets you on your next adventure. Last time I popped in after lunch, I picked up Joel Gion’s vinyl audiobook, In The Jingle Jangle Jungle, released by Rare Bird. I love Joel’s band, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and didn’t know about this vinyl pressing, in fact, I learned that vinyl audiobooks are a thing and now I have a new obsession.
Chris said something to me recently that I loved, “A local bookstore can anchor a retail district with a transcendent purpose: a place not just to shop or eat, but an intersectional location for idea sharing, inspiration, curiosity, connection and, possibly, a dash of witchcraft.” The good kind! While we were chatting, I asked about the storefront art which is a rotating collaboration with muralist Nathalie Cruz. It features iconic book covers from MCD Publishing, Grove Atlantic, and The New Press. Artists supporting artists supporting artists – that’s the way we like it here in NELA.
It’s hard to resist a pun here, but NFB’s next chapter is currently unfolding. They’re expanding to create event space for readings, performances, and community gatherings, plus a new gallery: The Citizen’s Band Art Hall. A fundraiser is launching later this month to help complete the project. Follow @northfigbookshop for updates.

These 78 paintings, a new tarot deck, are portraits of this new world—women and (mostly) men who are transforming the fields of science, finance, health care, social media, sales, marketing, entertainment, the auto industry, romance, real estate, travel, and sex.
Each painting presents an avatar, a single word of conjuring. They are elemental forces of fire, snow, water, wind, and rainbows. They are tactile things like meat or hair. Archetypes from history and myth.
They are seers, saints, jokers, demons, gods, humans, and frauds.

BIOGRAPHY
Kyle Kinsella has lived and worked in Los Angeles for 14 years. His richly colored representational paintings examine pop culture, myth and memory.
Inspired by the mythmaking city he lives in, and the movies and TV he grew up on, he seeks to turn the stories we tell each other and ourselves upside down – or blow them apart.
Born in 1972 in Oneida, New York he attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1991-1993) and St. Mary’s College of Maryland (1993-1996) where he graduated with double majors in Studio Art and English. He followed this up with a residency at the Vermont Studio Center and a summer at The New York Studio School.
He had a solo exhibitions at The York (2017) and Smooth N’ Purdy gallery (2018) in Highland Park. He’s also participated in a number of group shows including Tropico De Nopal Gallery, Leanna Lin’s Wonderland, the 4th Crxtivity Festival and the Made by 800 show.
