Shaun Licata, L34 Partner Agent Perched above Figueroa, I’ve always been inspired by the creative rhythm of Northeast LA. After years in Brooklyn, I’ve found that same artsy, authentic energy right here in NELA, and a community that is accepting of you no matter how you show up. But as I stepped into my new role as a realtor with the L34 Group this January, I realized there was one personal thing I wanted to change: my wardrobe. It was time to trade the years of sweatpants and tank tops for something that felt a bit more professional meets chic. The search for my new look became a family affair over the holidays when my brother and his girlfriend visited from Brooklyn. Since they are seasoned thrift store junkies, we fueled up with a slice from Triple Beam Pizza and hit the pavement.
Our mission took us through the local staples—The Bearded Beagle, Dee Luxe, Soft Humans, and Sunbeam Vintage—but the real magic happened when we stumbled into Intentionally Blank / When Two Becomes One. The shop is a treasure trove of indie retail and “unexpected goodies,” but it was the warm welcome that sold us. We were greeted by the owner, Ty, a local designer who has found a home for his funky, fashion-forward vision right in the heart of the neighborhood. Meeting Ty felt like meeting an old friend. His passion for the community is infectious, and his eye for style is exactly what I needed. I didn’t just leave with a new look; I left with two pairs of incredible shoes, a sleek new blazer, and a stylish tote, perfect staples in my quest for reinvention.
Ty was gracious enough to invite us back the following day for a holiday pop-up in the back of the shop. Still on my quest for “back-to-work” flair, I returned to find a community of local artists, jewelry designers, and potters. I might have walked out with more jewelry than one person needs, plus some organic candles and a one-of-a-kind pottery piece by Gerin del Carmen, but I felt thrilled. Being able to support local creators who are doing what they love is what makes this neighborhood special. If you’re looking for a style boost or just a good laugh, you must stop in and see Ty.
NELA truly has everything you need to redefine yourself. When I’m not rocking my fresh new style at an open house, you can find me at MadeBy Pilates discovering a greater body/mind alignment, walking my chihuahua, Coco, or planting succulents. Here’s to a year of supporting our neighbors while supporting ourselves, one home, one business, and one pair of shoes at a time. |
